Chevrolet has just unveiled a new package for the 2013 Camaro, with improvements to gearing, suspension tune, and tires all aimed at getting the car around a track faster through grip and handling rather than brute force. Additionally, only SS Camaros with the six-speed manual can be equipped with the 1LE package. Dubbed the “1LE.” This special package is geared to making the standard Camaro SS a bit sportier. Pricing has yet to be announced, but we could expect the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE to cost a little under $40,000.
The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE also features exclusive, monotube rear dampers instead of the twin-tube dampers on SS models. The new hardware allowed engineers to tune the 1LE suspension to focus on optimal body-motion control while preserving much of the ride quality and wheel-motion control of the Camaro SS. The package includes a modified drivetrain system with unique gearing and an external air-tow liquid transmission cooler, an upgraded suspension and better tires, allowing the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE to pull more than 1g of lateral acceleration.
Visually, the 1LE package is distinguished by its matte black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler – as well as the 10-spoke ZL1-based wheels, which are finished in black. The functional front splitter and rear spoiler contribute to the car’s on-track performance by helping to reduce aerodynamic lift at high speeds.
Other changes include unique black-painted alloys based off of the Camaro ZL1’s 20-inchers, while the Camaro 1LE also receives the ZL1’s wheel bearings, toe links, and shock mounts along with the ZL1’s high-capacity fuel pump. Despite these upgrades, the power output of the Camaro SS’s 6.2L LS3 remains to be 426hp.
